Scarlett Johansson, American actress (born on November 22, 1985 New York City New York) is a star who has been praised for her abilities to perform across genres ranging from period dramas to thrillers to action adventures. Johansson, the daughter of a film director and architect, grew up as a child in New York City. Her twin brother Hunter and her brother Hunter were her youngest siblings. As a toddler she discovered a passion in acting. She began auditioning for commercials at age 7. In order to develop her acting skills, she attended an acting class at Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Manhattan as well as she attended the Professional Children's School. In Off-Broadway's play Sophistry she appeared with Ethan Hawke at age 8 and then in North directed by Rob Reiner in 1994 she made her debut in film. Johansson made her debut on screen in Just Cause, but she gained recognition when she appeared in Manny & Lo, a film about orphaned siblings who fled. The film received critical applause for her performance as the teen victim of an injury that is disfiguring during The Horse Whisperer (1998) and gained more attention for her role as the cynical teenage outcast Rebecca on the set of Ghost World (2001).
